Herby’s Helpers
Herby’s Helpers was created in memory of my uncle Herby, a kind and gentle man who lived his life alone. He never married, never had children, and in his retirement years he often felt very lonely. Growing up on a farm, he believed dogs belonged outside — so he never imagined one could be a true companion inside the home.
That all changed when I asked him to foster two little dogs who had lost their Dad. He reluctantly agreed, those dogs completely transformed his life. They gave him laughter, routine, purpose, and unconditional love. For the first time in years, Herby’s house felt alive. He woke each day with a reason to smile, and he often told me those dogs gave him something to live for.
Herby’s story is not unique. Time and again, we see how deeply dogs enrich people’s lives — especially for seniors. A dog’s love eases loneliness, encourages daily activity, provides comfort during hard times, and creates a sense of purpose and connection.
Sadly, many seniors are told they’re “too old” to adopt. Families sometimes worry about what might happen to the dog if their loved one can no longer care for them. That’s where Herby’s Helpers comes in — offering peace of mind and support so seniors can experience the joy of adopting a companion without added worry.
What We Do
Why It Matters
Dogs don’t just need homes — people need dogs. Especially seniors, who often have abundant time, patience, and love to give. The companionship of a dog can bring joy to quiet days, comfort in difficult moments, and even better health through reduced stress and increased activity. Seniors and dogs enrich each other’s lives in ways nothing else can.
With Herby’s Helpers, we make sure no senior has to give up the dream of having a loyal companion — and no dog misses the chance to be someone’s whole world.
Some dogs that come into rescue are not considered adoptable — whether due to age, chronic illness, or special medical needs. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a loving home. Our Forever Foster Program was created to make sure these dogs are never left behind.
Through this program, dogs are placed directly into forever homes, not temporary foster care. These families welcome the dog as their own, providing daily love, comfort, and companionship. In return, our rescue covers the ongoing medical expenses and support the dog needs throughout their life.
This allows dogs who might otherwise be overlooked to live out their days in warmth and dignity, surrounded by love. It also gives families the joy of opening their hearts to a dog who truly needs them most.
How It Works
Why It Matters
Every dog deserves a home, no matter their age or health. The Forever Foster Program ensures that no dog is left without family and that every wag, cuddle, and happy day is celebrated. Together, we make sure these dogs spend the rest of their lives not just safe, but truly loved.
At Cross Your Paws, we are proud to honor the men and women who have served our country. Through our Pets for Appreciation program, veterans and active-duty military members receive $50 off their adoption fee. It’s our way of saying thank you and helping connect our heroes with the unconditional love of a rescue pet.
